Thank you for your interest in the NSS NEWS...
America's Caving Magazine!

NSS NEWS is the official monthly magazine of the National Speleological Society. It is mailed free to every qualified NSS member. Within its pages members can keep track of the numerous regional meetings held by caver groups around the country and be kept informed of Society business and affairs. In addition there are product reviews, articles concerning safety and equipment, conservation, and exploration.

Outside advertising from suppliers of goods and services is welcome and supported. Average monthly circulation of the NSS NEWS is 10,000 issues. More than 500 issues are sent to members residing in 49 countries outside the United States. In 1991, 600 NSS members were surveyed. In the July 1994 issue of the NSS NEWS the results of the survey were published, it concluded that:

The average NSS caver...

...is male (72%)
...is 38 years old
...is married (55%)
...has less than 2 children
...has completed over 15 years of education
...has a family income of $45,000 per year
...has never had a caving accident (89%)
...carries three or more sources of light while caving (83%)

With an above average income, and relatively small families, members have the means to purchase the equipment they need to make their caving trips more productive and enjoyable. The average cave explorer purchases helmets, gloves, coveralls, knee and elbow pads, headlamps (electric and/or carbide), packs, handheld lights, and batteries.

Most cavers combine other recreational activities with caving, including: photography, SCUBA diving, hiking, camping, skiing, rapelling and rock climbing-and purchase the equipment needed to perform these activities as well.

Some cavers use the underground environment to conduct scientific and technical activities such as: mapping and surveying; cave rescue; air, water and temperature monitoring; and archeological, paleontological, biological and geological research. Purchase of the specialized equipment to conduct this work is made by members' educational institutions, caving groups, as well as individual cavers.

Although caving is a specialized activity in itself, you can see that cavers are a diverse group that combine other talents and interests with cave exploration. This offers suppliers with the opportunity to reach a unique, yet mainstream, customer base by advertising in the NSS NEWS.

In addition to the 10,000 qualified members themselves, there are over 2,000 family affiliated members which read the NSS NEWS delivered to their household. The typical member keeps back issues of the NSS NEWS for more than one year. This provides advertisers with sustained exposure longer than one monthly issue.

The NSS NEWS welcomes the opportunity to evaluate new caving products. Contact the editor for details on how to submit an item for an independent product review. Product news releases are accepted and published as space and editorial discretion permits.

IF YOUR PRODUCT IS USED BY CAVERS, YOU CAN'T BEAT THE NSS NEWS FOR ADVERTISING RESULTS!

The NSS NEWS is typically printed in black and white on coated paper with a color front and back cover, and two to six pages of color inside. Process color advertisements are limited to the inside back cover or inside the issue if space allows. Black and white or spot color advertisements can be placed on the inside cover pages or in the interior of the publication.
