The Quintana Roo Speleological
Survey (QRSS) supports safe exploration, survey and
cartography of the underwater and dry caves of Quintana
Our information is an archive of diligent research by numerous explorers, cartographers and scientists who are committed to conservation and scientific documentation of this region's anchialine caves, dry caves, and cenotes. The QRSS effort may be considered to be one of the larger speleological research projects for underwater and dry cave studies in the world. We encourage all speleological groups to participate in this project. Our companion pursuit is to encourage cartographic representations of the underwater caves common to this area. Only 30 complete underwater cave or cave systems in Quintana Roo are illustrated through various types of cartographic media. Of these cave maps, most are outdated in view of recent explorations! We hope to stimulate underwater cartographic endeavors to further local understanding, education, and appreciation of all the caves of Quintana Roo. We welcome all individuals who are interested in participating in QRSS mapping, conservation, and science projects. Sustaining a current survey data base on the underwater caves in this region hinges on the generosity of our contributors. The QRSS archives this information for significant reasons. We do not reveal cave locations or where "going leads" might be found. Roo, Mexico. Created in 1990, QRSS maintains an extensive archive
of cave survey data for over 409 underwater cave and cave systems. Our
survey database includes confirmed data and reports for 1679.4 kilometers (1043.5
miles) of underwater cave passage. We also report confirmed dry cave survey data.
We are pleased to report a current total of 359.7 kilometers of surveyed dry
cave passage. This includes a growing collection of dry passage connected by sumps to underwater caves through a variety
of entrances. We continue to archive water chemistry, biological, archaeological, and
environmental observations for the area caves.
