New River Cave Nature PreserveWith its entrance in a bluff overlooking the scenic New River in Giles County and over 7 miles of mapped passage, New River Cave has long been one of Virginia's premier recreational caves, as well as a cave significant for its biological, geological, historical, and aesthetic features. Purchased in May 2014 by the NSS from long-time NSS caver and former Virginia Cave Board member Tim Kilby, New River Cave is open to all NSS cavers. Short term goals for the preserve include development of a more environmentally friendly access trail and associated parking area and kiosk. There are currently no plans to gate the cave, which has a long tradition of use by local spelunkers. Instead, through signage, educational displays, and most importantly the grandeur of the cave itself we hope to instill visitors with a sense of respect for our underground world, and hopefully recruit more conservation minded NSS cavers in the process! Access to the cave is open, but the preserve manager would appreciate an email, if you plan to visit the cave, and be sure to complete the register when you do! Also, please alert the preserve manager to any observations of note - conservation, safety, scientific, et cetera - made during your visit.
Cave softly.
