This video series was created by Derek Bristol (derekbristol.com ) and the NSS Board of Governors to be an educational cinematic collection for members and caving enthusiasts from around the world. It is intended to educate those who want to begin caving or those who want to know more about exploring underground. The series touches on proper safety.
The first part of the series shows an overview of the sport of caving. Caves are one of the last unexplored frontiers on earth and are considered one of the most fragile ecosystems. Cavers who practice this sport are interested in documenting these places and conserving them an for generations to come
Part 2 of our series takes a closer look into wild caving and how to get started. We take a look at what cavers do underground
as well as show you how to get connected to cavers around the country through your local grotto. This video also takes a further
dive into what caves are, where you can find them, and how they form.
Part 3 of our series talks more in depth about preparing and going on your first few caving trips. The video covers the
importance of working with an experienced cave trip leader or grotto on what to prepare for, the gear needed, how to handle
access to the cave and landowner relations guidelines, waivers and permits, as well as general rules and safety protocol while
underground.
For our last installment we take a look at what it means to project cave. Project cavers have an immense appreciation for caves,
caves, a desire to protect their fragile environments and curiosity to explore how they were formed and where they lead.
Normally these project/work trips are conducted for resource management, survey and exploration, restoration
and
conservation,
cave rescue training, cave science and research, and photography. Through these trips cavers
develop
their knowledge of specific cave systems and can better educate future generations of cave conservationists.
