TIPS FOR GIRL SCOUT CAVERS

NOTE: SAFETY IS THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY OF EVERY CAVING TRIP!!

Before the caving trip:

• Girls should have an understanding of the basics of caving and know what to expect on the trip.
• Girls need to learn spotting techniques and play team building games to gain teamwork skills.
• Group leaders should know the girls and know their skills and abilities.
• Caving groups should be no more than 7 people. The recommended group size is between four and seven people. Large groups move slowly through a cave.
• There should always be at least two adults over the age of 21 participating in a caving group.
• At least one of the adults must be First Aid/CPR certified and preferably Wilderness First Aid certified. The Wilderness First Aid Course is the next step in first aid courses beyond First Aid/CPR. It is intended for high adventure sports where the group may be at least an hour away from help.
• Tell a parent the name and address of the cave where you will be exploring and what time you are expected back.
• Place a sign on your vehicle letting the owner know the time your group went into the cave and what time you are expected out
• Place the vehicle keys in a place outside the vehicle where the group will find them in case of an emergency
• Follow all Safety Wise procedures

• Always use three points of contact while in the cave. This may mean two feet and a hand, a bottom and two feet, a hand and two knees, etc.
• Stop regularly to take breaks
• Drink plenty of water
• Make sure all cavers are eating their food
• Watch for signs of hyperthermia and fatigue
• Move only as fast as your slowest caver. Do not leave anyone behind.
• Use the buddy system. Never cave alone.
• Always stay within voice contact while exploring the cave.
• Never go into a space where the largest person in the group cannot go.
• Work together using spotting techniques to help the group cave safely. Encourage each other along the way and lend a helping hand. If you need help, ask for it.
• Let the group know about loose or falling rocks.
• Don't run and/or jump while in the cave.
