Cave Development in the Guadalupe Mountains: A Critical Review of Recent Hypotheses

Abstract

Recent workers have suggested that unconventional cave-forming processes, involving large-scale production of sulfate, have been active in the development of Carlsbad Cavern and other Guadalupe caves. Three conflicting mechanisms have been proposed. The observed features appear most consistent with creation of the larger caves by ascending water cahrged with sulfuric acid, produced by oxidation of hydrogen sulfide.
