Abstract

The skeletal remains of an adult sabertooth cat, Smilodon floridanus (Leidy), were recovered from a pit at the rear of Hurricane River Cave, Searcy County, Arkansas. The only other remains in the pit were those of extinct Black Bear, Ursus americanus cf. amplidens Leidy. Measurements are compared to those of sabertooth specimens from Nashville, Tennessee and Crescent, Oklahoma as well as to the large series from Rancho La Brea. Anomaies involving sacralization and the fusion of tarsal elements are decribed and figured. Insufficent carbon was present to allow dating of the bones.
