A Review of the Invertebrate Fauna of Volcanic Caves in Western North America

Abstract

The known invertebrate inhabitants of volcanic caves are listed together with comments on their ecology and distribution. Several highly specialized troglobitic species are present in these caves. The microclimatic similarity of volcanic to limestone caves is discussed. The occupation of temperate volcanic caves was precipitated by changing Pleistocene climatic conditions, just as was the occupation of temperate limestone caves.
