Caves as Archipelagoes

Abstract

An analogy is drawn between caves and archipelagoes. Using the formal theory developed for the number of populations of a species present in an archipelago it was possible to obtain estimates of migration and extinction rates for crustaceans in caves of the Greenbrier Valley of West Virginia. In general, these estimates agreed wth what is known about the species' biology.
