Taxonomic Relationship of the Salamander Genera Proteus and Necturus

Abstract

Opposing views of the evolutionary relationship of Proteus anguinus and the species of Necturus illustrate the problem of classifying paedogenetic salamanders. On the basis of information presently available the two genera should be retained in the family Proteidae.
