Scintillites: A Variety
of Quartz Speleothems
Dwight E. Deal
Abstract
Speleothems formed by the depostion of euhedral quartz crystals on solutional chert remnants occur in Jewel Cave, South Dakota. They are unlike any other known occurrences of silica in caves and I propose the name "scintillites" to be applied to them and to other similar speleothems.
