This article is a translation of an important work in the history of speleology. It was originally published in Copenhagen in 1655 as part of Museum Wormanum by the Danish naturalist Olao Worm, 1588-1654, and includes the first use of the word stalactite as well as a reasonable account of stalactite formation. These excerpts were translated from the original Latin by Bro. G. Nicholas, F.S.C.
