Abstract
Emil Racovitza was born in Jassy, Rumania on November 15, 1868. He studied in Paris receiving his Masters Degree in Science in 1896. From 1897 to 1899 he was naturalist on the Belgica Antarctic Expedition. In 1905 he began biological studies in the caves of the Pyrenees. These studies, in cooperation with Jeannel and Chappuis continued for 25 years. In 1906 Racovitza appointed professor of Biology at the University of Cluj and in 1929-30 was Rector of the university. Racovitza was an ardent conservationist and was greatly interested in furthering national parks on a world wide basis. He died on Novermber 19, 1947.
