Illinois Speleological Survey Sinkhole Cleanup 27 October 2001 St. Clair County, Illinois [Updated Information Not Available]
We will be having another sinkhole clean up at Stemler Cave Woods Nature Preserve the day before the meeting on Saturday, October 27. Please announce this at any upcoming grotto meetings, so we can get more people, which means less work per person! There is not much avaliable parking at Stemler, so please try to carpool. We can meet there between 9:00 - 10:00 am. The preserve is located just east of Columbia, Illinois. From I 255 take Route 3 south through Columbia and exit on Rt 158 east. Follow 158 approximately one mile and make a left (north) on Columbia Quarry Road and continue to first stop sign (Old Columbia Road or Bluffside Rd) and make a right (northeast). Follow that approx. 3/4 mile to Stemler Road and make a right (east). The preserve will be approx 1/4 mile on your right (south). This preserve is about a half hour drive from Collinsville or Horseshoe Lake State Park, and about 15-20 minutes from Waterloo. Please let me know if you need additional information. After the Clean-up, we plan to go for pizza and refreshments at JV's in Waterloo. Philip Moss has arranged for a tour of the sub-basements at JV's, which are reported to have cave-like qualities. SPECIAL NOTE: This is NOT the same as Stemler Cave itself. PLEASE do not park at Stemler Cave (unless directed to do so by Diane Tecic) and PLEASE do not disturb the Stemler Cave landowners. There is camping available at Horseshoe Lake State Park which is located within10 minutes of Cahokia Mounds. If many people want to camp, reservations would be a good idea. A group camping site is also available for a larger group. The park entrance is located on Hwy 111 just south of Horseshoe Lake Road. There are numerous reasonably priced motels and hotels in Collinsville. Here they are:
Beck's Lodge & Apartments, 1105 Saint Louis Rd, Collinsville, IL 62234,
(618-344-1957) Please let me know if more info is needed.
