Description "Citation of Merit"

"To Tex Helm, of Carlsbad, New Mexico, for many fine pictures of Carlsbad Caverns, but particularly for the inspiration and inicitive that led to the taking of the now fameous color scene of the Big Room. Made with the aid of 2400 flash bulbs, the unique picture has been scene and admired by millions of persons, many of whom previously been unaware of the beauty and interest of caves. The drama of this one photograph has inspired a leading national magazine to plan a major feature on Carlsbad Caverns."

Certificate has the National Speleological Society emblem at the top of the page. The text follows in caligraphy. The certificate is contained in a picture frame.

In 1952 Ennis Creed (‘Tex’) Helm (1903-82), a newspaper photographer, was sponsored by Sylvania to demonstrate the worth of their bulbs. Helm used 2, 400 flashbulbs connected by 5 km (3 miles) of cable to expose a single picture in the Big Room, Carlsbad Caverns
