| Sign/ Kiosk from the McFail's Cave Preserve Carlisle, NY New York's McFail's Cave, the first NSS-owned cave, is managed for recreation, exploration, and research. With over 6.7 miles of mapped passage, McFail's is the longest cave in the northeastern United States. Noted for its 45 degree water crawls, McFail's Cave is closed from October through May to protect the hibernating bat colonies. Donated in 1967, the property contains two other caves, each less than 500 feet long, and numerous sink holes. Managing this cave is the job of the Nature Preserve Committee, chaired by Tom Rider. The Committee makes sure that the parking area and the trails at the McFail's Cave Nature Preserve are maintained and, with the use of gates at the two entrances, controls access to the cave. http://www.caves.org/preserves/mcp/mcfails.html |
