Minutes 31 August 2011
Meeting called to order by Chairman Allen Dove at 8:06 pm
The total number of people in attendance at the end of the meeting was 22.
Treasurer's Report:
- $873.22 (same as last week).
- A check will be sent to the WV Caver on Thursday, September 1, 2011
Vertical Practice:
- Need for a Vertical Committee was discussed at the meeting.
- Eight people showed up for vertical practice on Wednesday August 31, 2011 at Mont Chateau. A Treadmill was set up to teach newcomers how to ascend and how to get on rope and all attendees rappelled and ascended the cliff.
Old Business:
- The Sports Organization that was a possible source of funds for the grotto was found and it was determined that the Grotto does not meet the requirements for being a "sport".
New Business:
- John Tudek reported on the state of grotto gear: 14 helmets, 12 working headlamps, 1 cable ladder, 3.5 sets of vertical gear that need to be sorted out.
- It was voted that John Tudek should purchase two AA headlamps, preferably Princeton Tec Coronas, at OTR and the grotto reimburse him.
- Allen Dove suggested that for guest speakers the grotto approach other local grottos to come and make presentations.
Program:
- John Tudek showed some pictures of the caves in Maryland that he is researching and surveying, and touched on what surveying is for the newcomers. He also showed the grotto some pictures of a trip he lead into Beaver Hole Upper.
- John Harmon presented a slideshow of past trips and events in which the grotto has participated and a promotional video for the new and returning members. Some highlights were TAG trips and GVKS Trips.
- Nicole Good talked briefly about via ferrata at Nelson Rocks.
Notable Dates:
- On September 6, 2011 a weekday trip will be held. All who plan on attending the trip are to meet at Lot 7 across from Brooks Hall at 6 pm.
- Beginners Weekend will be held on September 17-19, 2011. Meeting place and details of the trip have yet to be determined.
