From: "ashohn" Date: Fri, 30 Jan 2009 06:26:46 -0000 Subject: [wvusg] Meeting Minutes Meeting minutes for January 28: Old Business: Financial Report - $875.35 in the bank John Harman has not received the survey instruments. Dave Riggs updated the poster. Kyle Mcmillan still needs to print the posters out, talk to the people at the wall, and build a squeeze box. Gayle Suppa talked to Gordon Brace, who wouldn't be able to make it up for a geological colloquium. She asked Dan Zinz about it, but hasn't gotten a reply yet. Gayle Suppa will order two books for the Grotto library: Cave Geology by Art Palmer and On Rope by Bruce Smith. The trip to Greenbrier Co the Grotto was planning for this was canceled. New Business: Nick, who just returned from Oregon, is going to give a presentation for the Grotto about an expedition in Mexico. The tentaive date for the presentation in February 25. Nick has also offered to donate part of his caving library to the Grotto or anyone else who'll take it. News about Terra Incognito - Tom Lilly will write a trip report about leading a trip to Mystic. Also we need pictures for the newsletter. Send pictures to the webmaster (Dave Riggs) and we'll probably look at some in a meeting to decide which one to put on the cover. Tucker County - Brian Masney has been working on putting together all of the data for Tucker Co, which might be published sometime soon. There's still a lot of little things which need to be knocked off of the list in Tucker Co such as taking entrance photos, surveying, and relocating entrances. If you contact Brian Masney and let him know you're interested in going down, he'll even print out a to-do list for you. Trip Reports: Maiden Run - Last Friday (Jan 23), John Harman, Gayle Suppa, and Dan Brooks went down to Maiden Run. They installed a steel cable as the traverse line, so the cave rats wouldn't chew through it. They also surveyed about 180' past the pit, making it past the register room. There are two leads (high and low) and the bottom of a 10' pit, which could have shots taken in either direction. Shovel Eater - Nikki Green, Mark Minton, Vonny Drahms, and Kenny Nesselrodt went to Shoveleater last Saturday (Jan 24). They went back to a squeeze, which slopes steeply downhill with a mud floor. They surveyed about 80 or 90' before getting to another dig, but the air is promising. It's blowing enough that the stations would flutter in it. They dug for about 6 hours and made 10'of progress at the second dig, then went to check out some other leads. Scott Hollow - On Saturday, Ben Mirable, Dave Riggs, Abby Hohn, Mike Dor, John Powell, and another Mike went into Scott Hollow. They went all the way back past Kansas, which was almost 2 miles of caving through a nice stream (definitely a wet cave) and over mountains of breakdown in monster bore hole. After Kansas Abby, Ben, and Dave turned around to come back out, while the others went on to set dye traps, which was the point of the trip.
