From: "John Tudek" Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2007 20:54:41 -0400 Subject: [wvusg] Grotto Meeting Minutes for 10-3-07 Upcoming trips: Thorn-Sinnett (October 6-7) VAR-MAR (Oct 12-14) Elkhorn Mtn. (Nov 3rd) Meeting Minutes for 10-3-07 Meeting called to order at 8:05 by chairperson John Harman Old Business: Treasurer's Report: We have a total of $941.93 in the bank. T-Shirts: Will go to VAR. Must go to VAR. Football Game Fundraising: According to Rich, we may not get paid until after the season ends. John hopes it'll be sooner. There are still games in November and December. So sign up to help and help the grotto get rich. Student Grant: Adventurer's Edge quoted us as getting 10 Black Diamond half-domes for $500- which is a great discount. Grotto Gear Locker: Kyle talked to Brett and we're still working on trying to get space in the Rec Center. Trips: Elkhorn Mtn. (Nov 3rd): May also feature a trip to Nelson Rocks by way of the via ferrata. John Tudek will look at possibly organizing a horizontal trip to Cave Mountian Cave. And there's still the experienced vertical Elkhorn Mountain trip for those capable. So, something for everyone!! Thorn-Sinnett (October 6-7): We have a bunch of people already going. Departure time will be at 5pm from the Rec Center. Saturday's Cave is Thorn-Sinnett (for those already signed up for the waiver) and Mystic on Sunday. Directions were handed out at the meeting for drivers. If you are going and can drive, please let John Harman know!! at jharman2@mix.wvu.edu Mystic Cave is a wet cave. Try to keep the cotton to a minimum. Polypropylene is preferred. VAR-MAR (Oct 12-14): Will be discussed in depth next week. It's a great time! New Business: Corn Maze: Jessica wants the grotto to go to the corn maze as a group - preferably at night. Hopefully, she'll get us some more information at the next meeting. All the presentations will be pushed back a week. John Harman passed around a grotto list to make sure everyone has the correct address for their WV Caver. We're SERIOUSLY considering moving the meeting time forward to 7:30pm so that we have more options of where to eat afterwards. Trip Reports: Kyle and Matt went and supported the Jason Simmons' Memorial Scholarship Race. The grotto went to Upper Beaverhole trip and after much wailing and gnashing of teeth a trip report was given. The cave was very very dry and the stream passage was pushed to its limit. It pretty much ends in rat and spider nests. Kyle showed up spelunker-style later on. Or maybe he left that way. Either way, it was funny. The NCRC training session also occurred. Participants got to learn firsthand what it takes to move people in and out of a cave. The culmination was a *mock rescue* in Barton Cave where it took them 5 hours to get the *victim* out of the cave. Aaand there was a vertical practice tonight. Everyone involved is picking up on the techniques really well. John and Cullen went to good ole' Harper's Pit this weekend. They did the big drop but not the Funnel. Meeting was adjourned at 8:54 pm. -- Laws of Thermodynamics: 1. You cannot win. 2. You cannot break even. 3. You cannot stop playing the game.
