Date: Thu, 1 Feb 2007 21:36:54 -0500 From: "David A. Riggs" Subject: 2007-01-31 WVUSG Meeting Minutes Minutes for the January 31, 2007 meeting of the WVU Student Grotto. There were 14 people in attendance this evening, though the Chairman was not. In his absence, Vice-Chairman Dave Riggs led the meeting. Geology major Jessica Powell became an official member of the grotto - welcome aboard, Jessica! Upcoming Events: 1. This Monday, Feb. 5, we will be taking a beginner-level trip to Bowden Cave near Elkins. We will meet at 4pm at the WVU Rec Center to leave Morgantown, and should arrive at the Bowden parking area at 6pm (for those meeting us there). Rides should be available, email me [1] if you are not able to get to the Rec Center or if you have any questions. We should be back in Morgantown by 11:30pm. [1] Dave Riggs 2. The Tucker County trip planned for this weekend has been moved to next weekend! We will work out the trip details soon, but we will be leaving Morgantown early Saturday morning, Feb. 10 (~8am) and will meet the Monongahela Grotto near Canaan Valley, in Tucker County. We'll be going into Harr Cave #2, a very nicely decorated cave, and also probably Bob White or Red Run Cave. The trip will be suitable for beginners. We will be back that evening. This should be a great trip! 3. John Tudek is also leading a trip into Bowden Cave on Feb. 24 with the Geology Club. Grotto members are welcome, contact John for details. [2] John Tudek 4. Also that weekend (Friday 23rd through Sun 25th) you can help with dye tracing in the Cheat Canyon, here in our own backyard, Mon/Preston Counties. We will be attempting to show a hydrologic connection between New Years Day Cave and Druid Cave, a 4+ mile cave system. Contact Brian Masney if you'd like to help. [3] Brian Masney 5. Kyle says that there will be a joint WVU / Nittany Grotto cave trip the weekend of March 2-3. More details as they surface... Other Items: 6. Nathan Kile [4] [5] of the WVU Phys Ed Dept came to tell us about the Outdoor Adventure / Lifetime Activities [6] programs that he's organizing. Among the many cool opportunities are a Wilderness First Aid certification and a weeklong spring break backpacking/rock climbing/caving trip to TN (and much more). The Lifetime Activities programs are open to anyone, not just WVU students. Registration is limited, so act fast! [4] Nathan Kile [5] http://www.wvu.edu/~physed/kile/ [6] http://www.lifetimeactivities.org 7. Sarah Erwin [7] told us about the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life at WVU. Anyone wishing to form or join a team should contact her soon. The next team captain meeting is Feb. 26, the event itself is April 13-14. For more info, see their website [8]. [7] Sarah Erwin [8] http://www.acsevents.org/relay/wvu 8. Your slacker Vice-Chairman has membership cards printed but not yet laminated, they should be available at the next meeting (though he will be absent). These cards will get you 10-15% any purchase at several local outdoors vendors, available to dues-paying members only. Don't be the last one on your block without one! The meeting was adjourned at around 8:40 and the grotto wandered downtown for after-meeting refreshments. - DR -- David A. Riggs
